It would almost certainly be a large plane, both to accommodate larger fuel tanks and a larger internal weapons bay. Already, experts believe the defense budget will be flat or suffer a 5 percent cutdepending on whether a Repubican or Democrat wins the White House. Time and budgetary pressures are beginning to stack up against the new plane.
As a result, the Navy might eventually be forced into accepting a derivative of the F A new adaptive cycle engine, currently under development, adds a third stream to the existing afterburning turbofan engine design, allowing a pilot to optimize the engine for high performance or long range. The prospect of a new American fighter jet is an exciting one, but expectations should be tempered against reality. Developing a new fighter is exponentially more difficult than it was a half century ago, and there might well be less money to do so than the Navy anticipates.

The EN work environment includes main engine rooms, auxiliary machinery rooms, engine rooms, or shops. Usually, these locations are hot and noisy. Despite the hard, physical work, often in noisy and hot conditions, most ENs truly enjoy their work in the Navy. We keep the ship moving and keep the engines running.
The job of a Navy Engineman is physical and not always in the most comfortable environments. However, it is necessary, and the Navy is always on the lookout for men and women who can handle it. During a twenty-year career in the Navy, an EN will spend about 65 percent of their career at sea, and 35 percent assigned to shore stations. Also included are managing personnel responsible for cleaning, adjusting, testing, and the performance of other preventive maintenance on ships main propulsion diesel engine, ships service diesel engine generators, and other auxiliary machinery including electro-hydraulic steering units, elevators, winches, pumps and associated valves.

Technicians are expected to perform work independently and mentor Diesel Engine Systems Maintainers with very limited supervision.
